IBM DB2 11 Tools and Utilities: Delivering timely value to your business

Migrating to any new software release can be a lot easier when you are familiar with new features prior to deployment. So it stands to reason that you should familiarize yourself with new DB2 functionality before you try to migrate your environment to a new version. This training can take the form of:
  • Reading the DB2 manuals, especially the What’s New manual and the Technical Overview redbook that typically comes out with each new version of DB2
  • Attending presentations on the new release, whether online, at user groups, or even at IDUG or IBM Insight (which used to be the IOD conference)
  • Formal training from IBM or other sources

But the bottom line is that you need to educate yourself in advance of migrating to any new version of DB2... Otherwise, you may not be ready to move to the new version on a schedule that fits your business needs.

With IBM DB2 11 for z/OS, you can have a smoother migration process that also enables you to deploy key applications faster. New features and capabilities, both within DB2 11 and the tools and utilities that support DB2 can make migration easier.

And, of course, DB2 11 for z/OS comes with out-of the box cost savings and features that allow you to do more with business-critical analytics and applications. But are your DB2 Tools and DB2 Utilities ready to provide you complete exploitation or support? Do you know the difference?

Join me on June 10, 2014 as I deliver a webcast on DB2 11 for z/OS Tools and Utilities on behalf of IBM. During this informative webinar I will take you through some of the key features in DB2 11 and the importance of timely support for these features by your DB2 tools and utilities. I’ll expose some of the new capabilities of IBM’s tools and utilities for DB2 and I’ll also share ways to make your DB2 11 migration simpler, safer and faster.

And I’ll see you in June!

DB2 10 for z/OS: For Developers Only!

Today's blog post is to promote an upcoming FREE webinar that I will be delivering titled DB2 10: For Developers Only! The presentation is sponsored by the good folks at SoftBase Systems. and it will be conducted on Wednesday, September 14th, 2011, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm EST.

This presentation highlights the DB2 10 for z/OS enhancements that directly impact DB2 application developers. Every release of DB2 is chock full of new features and functionality and that can make it hard to focus on those things that are most helpful for programmers. So instead of scanning volumes of manuals, you can watch this presentation distills the DB2 10 information down to cover what should be most important to programmer/analysts.

Examples of areas this presentation will cover include:
• Binding issues and details for V10
• Temporal support with examples
• A new type of function
• New timestamp options and some improvements to existing SQL
• Implicit casting, access to currently committed data, and much more…

If you are a programmer wanting to learn more about DB2 10, or a DBA looking for the programmer’s perspective on DB2 10, this presentation should have something to offer you.

This is sort of a tradition for me... you may have heard me give a similar presentation for previous DB2 versions. Well, this webinar introduces a brand new presentation in this series, this time for DB2 Version 10...

So register today!

Free DB2 Education Webinar Series

Want to learn more about DB2 for z/OS but there is no money in the education budget? Can you spare an hour a week over the course of a month? Well then, you are in luck because SoftwareOnZ is sponsoring a series of DB2 webinars presented by yours truly, Craig S. Mullins

Each webinar will be focused on a specific DB2 topic so you can pick and choose the ones that are most interesting to you – or attend them all and receive a certificate signed by me indicating that you have completed The DB2 Education Webinar Series.

The schedule and topics for these sessions follows:

September 28, 2010 – DB2 Access Paths: Surviving and Thriving

Binding your DB2 programs creates access paths that dictate how your applications will access DB2 data. But it can be tricky to understand exactly what is going on. There are many options and it can be difficult to select the proper ones… and to control when changes need to be made.

This presentation will clarify the BIND process, enabling you to manage DB2 application performance by controlling your DB2 access paths. And it will introduce a new, GUI-based product for managing when your programs need to be rebound.

October 5, 2010 – Optimizing DB2 Database Administration

DB2 DBAs are tasked with working in a complex technological environment, and as such, the DBA has to know many things about many things. This makes for busy days. How often have you asked yourself, “Where does the time go?”

Well, the more operational duties that can be automated and streamlined, the more effective a DBA can be. This presentation will address issues that every DB2 Database Administrator and/or DB2 Systems Programmer faces on a daily basis. And it will introduce a new tool, DB-Genie, that will reduce the amount of time, effort, and human error involved in maintaining DB2 databases.

October 12, 2010 – DB2 Storage: Don’t Ignore the Details!

For many DB2 professionals, storage management can be an afterthought. What with designing, building, and maintaining databases, assuring recoverability, monitoring performance, and so on, keeping track of where and how your databases are stored is not top of mind. But a storage problem can bring your databases and applications to a grinding halt, so it is not wise to ignore your storage needs.

This presentation will discuss the important storage-related details regarding DB2 for z/OS, including some of the newer storage options at your disposal. And we will also introduce a new web-based tool for monitoring all of your mainframe DB2 storage.

October 19, 2010 – The DB2 Application Developer’s Aid de Camp

Building DB2 application programs is a thankless job. And it can be difficult to ensure that you have a effective and efficient development environment for coding DB2 applications. Can you easily identify which tables are related to which… and what indexes are available so you code queries the right way the first time? Do you have the right data to test your programs? Can you make quick and dirty changes to just a few tables or rows without having to write yet another program?

This presentation will discuss the issues and difficulties that developers encounter on a daily basis as they build DB2 applications… and it will present a useful programmer-focused toolset for overcoming these difficulties.

Summary

Certainly there will be something of interest for every DB2 professional in at least one, if not all, of these complimentary web-based seminars.

So what’s stopping you? Sign up today!

Who Did What to Which Data When... and How?

As the list of government regulations impacting IT grows organizations must adapt to understand and comply with new rules. This increasing compliance pressure is particularly intense on data stored in corporate databases. As such, organization need to be ever more vigilant in the techniques used to protect their data, and monitor access.

Database auditing, sometimes called data access auditing, is one technique growing in popularity as a response to the demands of regulatory compliance. At a high level, database auditing is basically a facility to track the use of database resources and authority. It can be used to help answer questions like “Who accessed or changed data?” and “What was actually changed?” and “When did it change?”

But how you implement your database auditing, especially in a mainframe environment, will have a significant impact on not just "the completeness" of what you capture in the audit trail, but on the performance and availability of your entire environment.

Join me on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 10:30 am, Central Daylight Time, for a free webinar where I will discuss the issues and requirements driving database auditing. This presentation can help to serve as a roadmap of sorts for your data access auditing needs.

Upcoming Webinar on Data Breaches and Databases

Anyone who has been paying attention lately knows at least something about the large number of data breaches that have been in the news. Data breaches and the threat of lost or stolen data will continue to plague organizations until comprehensive plans are enacted to combat them. Although many of these breaches have not been at the database level, some have, and more will be unless better data protection policies and procedures are enacted on operational databases.

If you are interested in this topic I will be conducting a free webinar titled Data Breach Protection: From a Database Perspective on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 10:30 am CDT. This presentation will provide an overview of the data breach problem, providing examples of data breaches, their associated cost, and series of best practices for protecting your valuable production data.

This webinar offers you the opportunity to:
  • Understand the various laws that have been enacted to combat data breaches and the trends toward increasing legislation
  • Learn how to calculate the cost of a data breach based on industry best practices and research from leading analysts
  • Gain knowledge of several best practices for managing data with the goal of protecting the data from surreptitious or nefarious access (and/or modification)
  • Learn about the available techniques for securing, encrypting, and masking data to minimize exposure of critical data

Free Webinar - Database Auditing for DB2 z/OS - July 29, 2008

Protecting corporate data is a requirement of doing business in today's regulatory and security-minded business environment. Protecting corporate data -- an especially sensitive data -- is a matter of knowing who is accessing data and what are they doing with it. There have been many solutions for addressing this need on distributed databases, but no reasonable solution for protecting mainframe data until now.

Learn all about an exciting new solution for auditing your DB2 for z/OS databases and resources - Guardium for Mainframes - at this free webinar on July 29, 2008.

Guardium for Mainframes provides 100% visibility into mainframe database activities without impacting normal business operations. This webinar will show you how to get better insight into database activity without the performance penalty of typical database trace utilities and without relying on inadequate log file data.

I'll be introducing the webinar and giving a quick overview of the issues, and Bill Baker, a senior software consultant with NEON Enterprise Software, will walk through a demonstration of the Guardium for Mainframes in action!
